Unlit Embers

You whispered my name from 'thin the dark
And bound my vulnerable heart
But when faced with the light of dawn
Softly spoken promises with swiftness did depart

You seemed to know my every weakness
You read me like an open book
I could not even summon strength
To resist your baited hook

You caused the unlit ashes
To burst into full flame
I rail at the injustice
Yet I'm alone to blame

With singleminded fury
You pursued without remorse
Grudgingly I followed
Entangled by your force

You left as though you'd never been
But your footsteps left their mark
And I am left lamenting
Once more suffused by dark
